Guinep (also known as Chenette, Mamoncillo, or Skinup) is a small, round stone fruit harvested from the Melicoccus bijugatus tree, a towering botanical common to the dry forests and coastal backyards of Guyana and the West Indies. Encased in a thin, brittle green shell that "pops" open when squeezed, it is the quintessential summer snack of the Caribbean. These fruits are chosen for their high fiber content and their historical role as a seasonal "blood cleanser" and natural astringent.
