Laxmi Attar

Laxmi Attar is a highly concentrated, oil-based perfume or "attar" that is central to Caribbean spiritual and cultural traditions, particularly within the Indo-Guyanese and Indo-Trinidadian communities. Named after Laxmi (Lakshmi), the Hindu goddess of wealth, light, and prosperity, this botanical oil is crafted without alcohol to ensure a long-lasting, pure fragrance that is both sacred and personal.

Flavor Profile Laxmi Attar is not for ingestion. Its aromatic profile is sweet, floral, and opulent. It leads with heavy notes of crushed rose petals and jasmine, grounded by a warm, honey-like resinous base. The scent is designed to be "divine"—rich, comforting, and deeply traditional.

Typical Use It is primarily used as a sacred anointing oil and personal fragrance. Because it is extremely potent, it is applied in small "dots" using a glass applicator or a fingertip to the pulse points (wrists, behind the ears, and neck). Unlike alcohol-based perfumes, it reacts with body heat to release its scent slowly throughout the day.

Cultural Use & Recipes

  • Devotional Anointing: Culturally, it is a staple during Puja (prayers) and festivals like Divali. It is used to anoint murtis (sacred images) or added to the wick of a deya (oil lamp) to fill the home with a "prosperous" and inviting aroma.
  • The "Success" Ritual: Many individuals apply a small amount to their palms before starting a new business venture or attending an important event, as the scent is traditionally believed to attract favorable energy and the blessings of abundance.
  • Spiritual Cleansing: It is often added to "sweet water" washes. By adding 2–3 drops to a bowl of water used to wipe down a storefront or home entrance, it is believed to invite peace and harmony into the space.
