Mohabir Cockshun / Chaney Root Bark
Mohabir Cockshun and Chaney Root are two of the most legendary medicinal botanicals in the Caribbean, particularly in Guyana and Jamaica. These are woody, iron-rich roots and barks harvested from climbing vines deep within the tropical rainforest. Often sold together or interchangeably, they are the "gold standard" for traditional blood tonics and are prized for their high mineral content and natural revitalizing properties.
Flavor Profile This blend has a deeply earthy, musky, and bittersweet flavor. When boiled, it produces a dark, mahogany-colored liquid that is heavy and robust. It carries a distinct "forest" aroma with a slight metallic undertone—a natural characteristic of its high iron concentration.
Typical Use It is primarily used to create a potent "Building" Decoction. Because these roots and barks are extremely dense and hard, they must be boiled vigorously for at least 30 to 45 minutes to extract their medicinal essence. The resulting liquid is often used as a concentrated base for "Roots Wine" or herbal punches.
Cultural Use & Recipes
- The "Blood Builder": Culturally, this is the premier remedy for "thin blood" or anemia. It is believed to increase physical strength, improve circulation, and restore the body's natural "fire."
- The Stamina Tonic: It is a cornerstone of the famous Caribbean "Front-End" tonics. To prepare, boil 3–4 pieces of Cockshun and Chaney Root in 6 cups of water with a piece of dried ginger. Once the water is deep red/brown, strain and sweeten with molasses or honey.
- The "Roots" Punch: For a traditional energy booster, the boiled decoction is cooled and blended with oats, nutmeg, and condensed milk to create a thick, creamy beverage used to support stamina and reproductive health.
- The "Set" Bottle: Similar to other Guyanese barks, it can be "set" (soaked) in white rum for several weeks to create a concentrated medicinal bitter.
